EXTENDED ABSTRACT: The surface condition of work rolls in the late finishing stands(F5 - F7) during the production of a hot strip mill (HSM) largely determines the surface quality of strips. By applying high-end rolls with higher performance and excellent surface quality, the hot rolling process can be further optimized to improve the surface quality of strip products and yields. The industry has also been waiting for better roll solutions to minimize the impact of rolls on strip and the need for frequent roll changes to avoid deterioration of roll surface, which can affect rolling efficiency. Driven by the development of intelligent manufacturing and integrated computing technology in the material engineering, hot-rolled strip is actively seeking new roll material solutions to solve its surface quality issues caused by roll surface, especially the subsequent need to undergo pickling, cold rolling, galvanizing and other high surface quality demanding strips to achieve extreme efficiency. This paper analyzes the micro-area defects of hot-rolled products and subsequent products due to the rolling process and the use of rolls by industrial practices. Through the analysis of micro-area defects, feedback is fed into the roll material and manufacturing process, and the standard of late finishing work rolls in a HSM post-roll work rolls is designed according to the material matching roll.

Dr. ZHANG Zhi, graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, is currently the senior director researcher in the Central Research of Baosteel Co., Ltd. He has long been engaged in the research of solidification science and advanced manufacturing technology of high-alloyed iron-based materials, focusing on the materials'wear resistance, toughness and strength research fields as well as the ICME method. Moreover, he is centralized the research on the steel rolling process, strip and plate roll manufacturing technology and their applications.
